Shure SM57
The Shure SM57 is a dynamic cardioid microphone widely used for instruments both on stage and in the studio. It has a focused pickup pattern that captures the sound directly in front of the mic while rejecting much of what’s happening behind it, which helps reduce bleed and background noise in louder environments. Its frequency response, ranging from about 40 Hz to 15 kHz, is shaped to bring out the attack and presence of sources like snare drums, guitar amps, brass, and other instruments that need to cut through a mix clearly. The SM57 is known for being physically tough, with a die‑cast steel body and an internal pneumatic shock mount that helps limit handling noise and vibrations. It doesn’t require phantom power since it’s a dynamic mic, and its sensitivity of roughly –56 dBV/Pa makes it well suited for close‑miking loud sound sources without distortion. These traits have made the SM57 a long‑standing standard tool in live sound and recording work, appreciated for its reliability and consistent performance.
